What I did in 2011, Part 4 – Open Mic

It had been suggested that I take my fantastic musical talents (sic) around the local pubs for years. For some reason, this year it actually happened. I don’t know I waited so long, my playing is pretty rusty now and my singing worse, but five years ago I was probably singing and playing the best I ever had. You will have to take my word for that, there is no evidence now.

I did three open mics, one a week. And managed to get some of my friends to capture these historical occasions on camera. come 2012, I will start again, with fresh songs and hopefully better singing.

This is the first song I did, at the first open-mic. It doesn’t come across so well, but I was crapping myself.

Work blocks youtube, so I’ll have to have a look later. I’ve only ever been to one open Mic night, which I have to say put me off somewhat. I’m a keyboard player and definitely NOT a singer, so I just went along to Jam really. It was one November and really cold and the pub we went to had an open fire. So everyone was sat around the open fire. It looked a little like a Val Doonican gig ( not that I’ve ever been to one of those, but it’s how I imagine one would be ). There were a couple of standard blues numbers which went ok, but mostly people doing their own stuff, with everyone else trying to catch a chord here and there and attempting to play along.

So applaud your courage for getting up there and doing it.
